Haathi Mere Saathi is a 1971 Hindi language film Starring Rajesh Khanna & Tanuja. It was directed by M.A. Thirumugam, screenplay was written by Salim-Javed and dialogues were written by Inder Raj Anand . The film was the highest commercial success of 1971. It stars Rajesh Khanna and Tanuja in lead roles. Raju likes to surrounds himself with his four elephants after a childhood incident in which the big-eared creatures saved his life from an attack by a leopard. But when his wife gives birth, she worries that Raju's long-trunked pals will crush their baby. Unable to tear himself away from his lumbering animal friends, Raju breaks up with his wife, but when the elephants learn of Raju's sorrow, they hatch a plan to bring the couple back together. Story: Raju ( Rajesh Khanna ) lives with four elephants. He performs for them on the street corners. This is their livelihood. When he was young, those elephants saved his life from a leopard. With time he grows and starts a zoo, a world of love. Various wild animals live in it along with his elephants, of which Ramu is closest to him. Gradually he acquires property and starts his own private zoo. In this he keeps a tiger, a lion, a bear and his four elephants. He considers all animals as his friends. Later he meets Tanu ( Tanuja ) and both fall in love. Tanu's rich father, Ratanlal ( Madan Puri ), opposes this alliance but later allows the young couple to marry. However, Tanu soon starts feeling neglected. When their child is born, things get worse. Tanu, fearing the elephant causing physical harm to her baby, asks Raju to choose between the elephant and her family. Raju chooses his animal friends over his wife and son. Now Ramu decides to bring the two together, but because of the villain Sarvan Kumar ( K N Singh ) he has to sacrifice his life.
